A great big happy family! ~ Ottawa Family Photographer

This lovely Family contacted me back in July to book a session in celebration of their parents (the kiddo’s grandparent’s) 40th wedding anniversary. And of course I was excited to capture some special memories for them at this exciting time! I mean, its not every day that you hear about people celebrating 40th wedding anniversaries! Definitely a perfect opportunity to update the family photos!

The weather this past weekend, unfortunately, wasn’t on our side. So this session was shot at two separate times – Saturday evening and Sunday morning. For the location, they chose a park that has special meaning to them. Cathy and Nicole (the two sisters) both decided they wanted to live in this area and raise their families to be close with each other. So with 6 adults and 4 children, we all met down at Brantwood park in Old Ottawa East and captured a few group shots as well as some candids of the kids just having a good time at the play structures. I’m not gonna lie…these 4 little cuties gave me a run for my money! But I did manage to get some lovely shots of each of them, some shots of the individual families as well a couple of great group shots of everyone.

Thank you SO much for choosing me to capture these memories for your families! And a BIG happy 40th wedding anniversary to Paul and Millie!

P.S. You’ll notice that a few of my more recent blog posts are getting longer…and that I’m blogging MORE images. The reason is simple – it’s cause I just really love blogging. ;) And I especially love being able to showcase to my prospective clients more of what a whole session looks like so that they have a better idea of what they can expect. So what you’ll likely start seeing won’t be entire sessions, but usually just a larger number of my own personal favorites from each. :)

P.P.S. I only have a handful of session dates left for Fall 2011 sessions!! If you had been thinking about booking a session for your family, please contact me sooner rather than later to reserve your date!

Ottawa Headshots ~ Kristen

Last Friday evening I had the pleasure of photographing Kristen. She contacted me a couple of weeks back hoping for some gorgeous headshots that she will be able to use professionally. So we met down at the War Museum since she lives near by, went for a little stroll and snapped some beautiful images! Here are my favorites from my session with the super photogenic Kristen!

I loooove how the grey wall complimented these portraits so well!!

More Morgan! ~ Ottawa Children’s Photographer

Better late than never, right? ;)

If you recall, I did a session with the gorgeous Morgan back in late March. You can view the images and read more about Morgan’s story here. At 8 years old, Morgan is such an inspiration. On her own, she decided that she wanted to collect a mile of hair and donate it for Cancer. Well, a few weeks back Morgan finally got her hair cut with a number of other girls from her hockey team, and a few more from the Cornwall area was well. Because our schedules didn’t coincide, I wasn’t able to attend the hair-cutting itself, however, Morgan and I were able to meet up last week to take some of the “after” photos of Morgan with slightly less hair! Isn’t it totally ADORABLE?! I think it suits her!

I love opportunities like this. To not only meet new people, but to have the amazing opportunity to photograph people in our community who are making such a big difference. Thank you Morgan for allowing me to document this time for you. I’m looking forward to keeping connected with Morgan and her Mom through Twitter and you can bet that if Morgan has any new ideas (or more hair to cut!) I’ll be the first in line to offer my support and to help document it!

What are we waiting for? ~ Ottawa Family Photographer

Next month? Next year? Several years from now? Is there ever really a perfect time to have your family photos taken? If so, when?

I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot lately. Because I, myself have really been slacking on making sure I have enough of images of my OWN family. Not just my kids – of my ENTIRE family. Awful of me I know. But its like that saying “the cobbler’s children have no shoes”. In the past I’ve focused so greatly on building my business and photographing other’s families and kids, that often I’ve inadvertently neglected to document my own family. I’m working on making major changes in that department.

When I hear chatter from people about whether or not to get family photos, I often hear a lot of this type of thing:

“We don’t have time this year…maybe next year…”

“Maybe when we can afford to spend more…photos are so expensive…”

“Maybe when I lose those last few pounds…”

Does this sound like you? Of course it does. Because it sounds like me as well. If truth be told, I am not comfortable in front of the camera. I never have been. At the moment I am not at my goal weight. I feel like every time I have a camera pointed in my direction I look like I’m making the Chandler Bing smile AND despite how easy I am able to make it look, my kids are super difficult to photograph. Sometimes it seems more like torture than an enjoyable experience for me. So believe me, if you have a reason for not doing this, I get where you are coming from!

But guess what? I also have a fear. I have the fear that after I am gone, my children will only have a small handful of photographs of me. I worry that when they think about me, they won’t remember me as the Mom who’s in the photos with them, but rather as the mom who took them all or worse, ducked out when a camera was pointed her way. And that is not the legacy I want to leave my family with. No matter how unhappy I could ever be with parts of my body, or how awkward it feels to be in front of the camera, I know in my heart of hearts that my kids won’t be looking back at the photos saying “Sheesh, I wish she’d have lost some weight before taking those pictures” or “I wish she had a nicer smile“. No. Because I am their Mom. And like all children, mine love me far beyond my own insecurities. And so do yours.

There is no perfect time.

It’s true. There will always be a reason not to do this. But life is uncertain. Those of you who have ever lost a loved one knows this all too well. We have no idea what’s in store for us tomorrow, or a week from now, or a year from now. There are people as young as myself being diagnosed with things like Breast Cancer. And that scares me to death. So I can’t wait. I can’t hope that the perfect time for a family photo is around the corner. The perfect time is now.

Are family photos expensive? Its an investment. And like any investment, cost is relative – its about what you VALUE. Putting off that new techie gadget or designer handbag could easily afford you an amazing set of professional quality images. What about time, you don’t have enough time for family photos this year? Set aside 2 hours. Seriously. That is the length of the average family photography session. How about your weight? Still waiting to lose 10, 20, 30 pounds? Stop stressing! Love yourself for who you are and just be the person your family loves. Because you…yes YOU are fabulous and beautiful just the way you are.

I hope this post is that little push that some of you need to take a real, honest look at some of the reasons you may have been putting off family photos. And I hope that you act on it. Book yourself a session with a professional photographer who’s work you admire. I think you’ll realize the same thing that I, myself am slowly learning – how painless it really is.

Junk in the Trunk! ~ Ottawa Photographer

Isn’t junk beautiful? There’s nothing more beautiful than junk. Or at least that’s what I think. Its so interesting. So historic. I could easily become lost in a place full of junk. Just wandering around in my own little world, admiring its flawed beauty, imagining what adventures it’s been on or what kinds of things its seen in it’s day. Sometimes I worry that this type of stuff won’t exist for my kids to enjoy. Everything today is made to be cheap and disposable. You buy something today and chances are it’ll be in a landfill in a couple of years. To me, a place like this isn’t just a junk yard, its a museum.

Danielle Lynn Photography

My good friend and fellow Photographer Christine and I embarked on an impromptu Junking expedition of Eastern Ontario last week. With the warm weather approaching in the not too distant future we wanted to stock up on props. But it turned out to be SO much more than that for the both of us. I even said to her at one point that I can’t seem to take my camera away from my face long enough to actually shop! LOL! I’m a very intentional photographer. I’m not a random shooter. I won’t just shoot for the sake of shooting and hope something good comes out of it. When it comes to shooting people, a moment has to present itself to me. I have to feel it. When it comes to shooting in situations like this, its exactly the same. I saw and felt SO many amazing opportunities on our little expedition! Junking is definitely going to be an on-going hobby of mine! It was EXACTLY the inspiration I needed going into the Spring/Summer/Fall seasons!

Oh, and did I actually end up finding props during this picture taking frenzy? YES! Some AMAZING ones. Ones that I’m crazy-excited to use this Summer. Christine and I both came away with some serious junk in the trunk. ;)

These chairs reminded me of 3 old men sitting, talking about the good old days. I bet these old guys have sat through many an interesting conversation.

Prop Shopping in Eastern Ontario

Eastern Ontario PhotographyThis place was CHAIR HEAVEN! It was essentially the entire upper level of a barn. I was in LOVE. Also loved how it was nearly pitch dark except for the light coming through a few small windows. Gorgeous, gorgeous light.
