Ottawa Photographer :: Lots of big, BIG news!

Eeeeek!

I am SO, SO excited to share with you all of my big news!!! After many late nights, headaches, re-designs, revisions and the incredible patience of my wonderful husband – I have a FABULOUS NEW website and blog! So I am so pleased to present: the new and improved Danielle Lynn Photography!

For this new website and blog, I decided I wanted to go for a simpler, cleaner look. I needed them to be super functional and easy for my clients to navigate. Most of all though, it had to be unique. For me, this year is all about continuing to set myself apart, being different and showing Ottawa how professional photography is really done. ;) My work isn’t cookie cutter…and I run a far from boring photography company…so why should my site be just average? After a phenomenal 2011 (and a wonderful 2012 so far) I am feeling proud, confident and excited about my work and I’m thrilled to have this brand new website to showcase it. :)

You may have also noticed from the main slider on the home page of the new website that I have a new slogan. Yup…3 years later and I finally have a slogan to call my own. Up till now I was never in a huge hurry to find a slogan to be honest. I wanted the words to find me, not the other way around. And for the love of Pete it couldn’t be kitchy, cliche or full of photography related buzz words. So as I was going through my images to create my new site I began thinking about what my images represent. What sort of story do they tell about my clients? What sort of things might my clients be feeling at the exact moment the shutter is clicked? And what is the message I want to give potential clients about the kind of photographs I want to take for them? And then it dawned on me:

It was like the sky opened up, the clouds parted and the angels sang “Awwwhhhhh”. It had finally found me. And I’m in love with it. Jump-on-the-bed, throw-my-hands-in-the-air L.O.V.E. It represents everything I want my images to represent. It represents truth. It represents happiness. It represents family. It represents love. It represents me. It represents you.

:: :: ::

In celebration of all of these wonderful things happening for me and my lovely little company, I wanted to do something fun by giving something away. This isn’t a random giveaway. You don’t have to Tweet it or do anything on Facebook. Its simply something I wanted to do for the next clients who book a family session with Danielle Lynn Photography. You see, I LOVE to see a client’s images showcased in their home. Actually, a couple of weeks ago I did a session for a family who’s photos I also took in the summer of 2011. And I actually got EXCITED to see that they had printed so many of the images from the disc that they purchased and had them displayed in various areas of their home. THAT my friends, is what this is all about for me. So I figured, what better to give away than FRAMES! Beautiful, hand-crafted, hand-painted, boutique style picture frames from the fabulous Zin Frames!

These gorgeous Canadian made frames are crafted to hold an 8×10 image (although once the image is in the frame, the whole thing looks more like an 11×14 due to the lovely border) and comes with a glare-free plexiglass to keep your photos protected and secure inside the frame. There is also hardware on the back which allows you to hang your frame on the wall either vertically or horizontally. Or, if you don’t want to hang it, these could also be displayed on your desk using a lovely easel. This particular design that I am giving away is called ‘Ameile’ and all three are Ivory in colour.

I have only THREE of these beautiful frames. So the next THREE clients to book and pay for a session with me will receive ONE frame, and ONE 8×10 print to go inside as my gift to you. :) You can use the session immediately OR it can be presented to you or a loved one in Gift Certificate format! This frame and the lovely 8×10 print to go inside are worth an over $85 Value!

How do I do it? Simple! Just fill out the contact form indicating that you would like to book a session. This session can be used ANY TIME and can be used by yourself or purchased as a gift for a friend. I will send you an invoice to pay your session fee as well as the rest of the information to complete the booking and that’s it! You can look forward to your fun, one-of-a-kind session with yours truly AND a lovely frame to display your treasured memories in!

Please note:

* Sessions booked must be regular sessions only, and may not be combined with any other offer.

* Frames have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for any other product or service.

Thank you all so much in sharing my big news with me! If you haven’t been over to the new Danielle Lynn Photography website yet, please check it out!!

Top 5 reasons that winter sessions ROCK! ~ Ottawa Family Photographer

As an Ottawa Family Photographer, I am grateful to live in one of Canada’s most beautiful cities. On top of our (usually) fairly manageable winter weather, we are also lucky to have so many picturesque places like the parliament buildings, the Rideau Canal, the Agricultural Museum as well as Gatineau Park and the Byward Market. These locations are beautiful year round…but did you know that they all become extra magical during the winter? True story. :)
This year, I really want to show all of my readers what an amazing time of year it is for family photos. Because believe it or not, this time of year seems to be overlooked…and this needs to change! So I’ve compiled “Danielle Lynn Photography’s Top Five Reasons that Winter Sessions ROCK!” list. I hope that this post encourages families to really consider some of the unique advantages this season has to offer when it comes to outdoor (AND indoor!) family pictures!

1) Snow is magical! Whether its falling gracefully from the sky or is just blanketing the ground of one of our gorgeous Ottawa area parks, it can set the perfect scene for a beautiful ‘Winter Wonderland’ type of session! Imagine strolling through the park, hand-in-hand with the kiddos as snow falls delicately from the sky! Definitely a portrait that every family should have!

2) Activities and Sports! Build a snowman, go on a peaceful winter walk, have a snowball fight with the kids or go for a skate on the Rideau Canal! Winter is the perfect time to choose an activity to do as a family and to have me tag along to document your fun! I’ll bring the hot chocolate. ;)

This family LOVED winter sports and activities so an outdoor family photo session in January was the perfect thing for them!

3) The cold weather conditions are PERFECT for getting close and snuggly! Yes my friends! Embrace the cold weather, bundle up and use the opportunity to capture some beautiful, intimate portraits while you and your little snuggle bunnies (that means kids AND adults alike) keep each other toasty warm.

4) Winter fashion is far more awesome than most realize! Wool jackets, fun scarves, cute mittens, leg warmers, fashionable boots, vests, cute knitted hats – there are seriously SO many possibilities to coordinate some beautifully layered outfits. For my own family, I shop at places like Old Navy, The Gap, Gymboree and The Children’s Place. Or better yet, I LOVE scouring places like Value Village for unique, one-of-a-kind or vintage items! Oh…and don’t be afraid to wear a little colour this season too. Bright colours in winter = FABULOUS!

5) Okay, okay…so snow and cold is REALLY not your thing? Well…if I haven’t convinced you of the awesomeness of winter yet, an in-home family session is probably more of your thing. Winter is a great time for this because no matter how cold it is you can simply light the fire, curl up with your baby, hubby, fiance, kids or pets. Of course, these in-home sessions can happen year round, but they especially rock in winter because there’s no better time to get cozy with the ones you love. :)

To book your in-home or outdoor family session with Ottawa Family Photographer Danielle Lynn Photography, please fill out the contact form! I look forward to photographing you in however you would like to take advantage of this wonderful season!

Ottawa Newborn Photographer ~ Sweet Baby T

Probably my favorite thing about the type of Newborn Lifestyle Photography I do is the authenticity. No posing, no props and no rules about the age of the baby or how sleepy they must be. Just raw, honest documentation of life. I want to see the half-made beds, the empty baby bottles on the night-stand, the mis-matched baby socks on the dresser and the exhausted but blissful smile on Mom’s face as she gazes down at her sweet miracle. These are real moments. These are the moments that you will forget. And in 5, 10, 15 years from now when you look back at your newborn photos, it is my ultimate hope is that the images from your session will flood your heart with memories of this wonderful, emotional time – exactly as it happened.

When Sandra contacted me for baby T’s photos, I was delighted at the opportunity to photograph a 5 week old! For lifestyle newborn photography, this is a fantastic age. The baby is still so newborn-ish (yes, I do believe I made that word up…) but at the same time, alert and becoming more aware of the world around them. Baby T was a sweetheart too. Chubby round cheeks and just the littlest double chin made him one totally edible little dude! Oh, and you may remember Sandra from the family photography session at Mooney’s Bay over the Summer! So yes, that means that little A is a big sister! :)

Thank you so much Sandra and baby T for having me in your home to photograph the love that you share. I hope I have the opportunity to photograph all four of you in the not too distant future!

How I am using Pinterest! ~ Ottawa Family Photographer

Most of us in the photography and creative world are becoming all too familiar with the wonderful world of the newest social media site, Pinterest. But from what I seem to be hearing when I talk to friends who aren’t necessarily in creative professions, Pinterest is still a relatively unknown thing to a lot of people. What exactly is Pinterest you ask? I’m going to tell you all about it…AND, share with you how I’ve been using it to help my clients!

Pinterest is basically an online inspiration board. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll be able to create boards of different categories on which you “pin” things that you find around the web. You can also access boards of people whom you follow and “Re-pin” things that they may have pinned. Its popular with photographers, crafters and other artists because its so visual and allows us to share ideas, learn new things and be inspired. It also has a strong social networking component to it which allows you to comment on other people’s pins as well as tag people in pins, all in a very user-friendly way. It’s visual bookmarking at its best! At the moment, Pinterest is still by invitation only BUT, if you’d like an invite please leave a comment with your email address and I’d be happy to send you one!

What can YOU use Pinterest for if you aren’t a photographer or a creative at all? Well…pretty much anything! Use it as a place to visually organize some of your favorite online recipes (that part alone has made my life SO much easier!), use it to save articles or books you’d like to read, organize some home renovation project ideas, collect ideas for your wedding or new baby arrival, discover endless numbers of ideas of activities to to with your kids and even use it as a place to post all of your funny or swoon-worthy celeb photos. Wait…maybe that’s just me? ;)

Here’s what a few of my boards look like (and once you join, you can follow me HERE!):

Yes, that’s correct. At the time of this post I have 33 boards and 3689 pins. Some might say I’m easily inspired. I call it ADDICTED. Down right, utterly, completely and totally addicted. So its also worth noting that once you start pinning you won’t be able to stop. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya! ;)

Now for the part I’m very excited about!!!

One of the most common questions I am asked from clients is ”What do we wear for our session?”. Most often I simply refer them to the page of my website where I indicate a few suggestions of what would work. The problem is, its not very visual. And if you are like me, visual is important. Its so much easier for me to see and understand something when its shown to me. So in an effort to make this easier for my clients to understand exactly what types of outfits photograph nicely, I created a board called “Client What to Wear Inspiration“. On this board I will be pinning anything and everything I can find that will help you determine what to wear for your session. If applicable I will also make note under each photo about what specifically works about the outfit(s) so that you as clients will see exactly what I think makes it awesome. And if you happen to be on Pinterest yourself, please feel free to ask questions or comment on any of the photos and I will happily respond!

I am thinking that over time, there is also the possibility that I could add additional boards for my clients too. Easy hairstyles, accessory ideas, helpful articles to read before your session, even local location possibilities! The ideas are endless! To find out about any of the new boards I create you can follow me on Pinterest or become a fan of my Facebook page, since I’ll likely announce it there too!

Andrew, Gail and Baby Molly ~ Ottawa Family and Newborn Photography

The first session of 2012! And I couldn’t have asked for a nicer, more lovely family to photograph. With the chaos of having a new baby, I am grateful that they welcomed me into their home to photograph the newest (and first!) addition to their family – baby Molly! First, I have to say that I LOVE her name. It’s totally adorable and is up there amongst my own personal favorites. Molly herself was a delight too. She was awake the entire time and didn’t seem at all phased by cameras or being the star attraction of the day. ;) Such a beautiful little princess and at just under one month old, its clear as day that she’s got Mommy and Daddy wrapped around that itty bitty finger of hers! ;)

Oh, and did I mention that Barley the cat decided to join the fun? ;)

In-home sessions are quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to photograph families. A big part of the reason is because of the intimacy it creates. Where are you most comfortable? Where are you able to most comfortably be yourselves? Your home of course! And the more I do it, the more I see how this comfort, emotion and intimacy translates visually in my images. If you’ve just had a baby, are expecting a baby or would love to have fun and cozy in-home family session, I’d love to hear from you! I have a special offer I plan to share in a few days so be sure to check back here for those exciting details!!!

Happy New Year everyone!!!
