Chasing the Light ~ Ottawa Childrens Photography

A daughter is the happy memories of the past, the joyful moments of the present, and the hope and promise of the future.  ~Author Unknown

Her raw beauty, her sweet innocence, her pure honesty, her amazing, strong personality, her ability to love wholeheartedly and without judgment. She has many qualities that I, myself, do not possess and I hope she never outgrows them. I admit, 3 has been a challenging age for us so far. She is very strong willed and determined these days. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having the privilege of loving this girl is not something I ever take for granted, no matter how challenging she is!

Last night I decided to grab the camera, my girl and one of my vintage chairs and chase around the light out in a field near our home here in Ottawa. We got EATEN ALIVE by horseflies but she was a great sport and I think all of the bug bites were worth it. ;-)

Featured: Kids in the Capital!

As an Ottawa Photographer who works with families and children of all ages (some of whom I know read this blog!), I’d really love to get the word out about things I know and love in and around Ottawa. Recently I’ve fallen in love with a new blog written by Moms in Ottawa called Kids in the Capital. These ladies literally blog about anything and everything you’d ever want to know about if you are an Ottawa Family. You’ll find anything from reviews of some of the city’s parks (I’ve written a guest post for them that you an read HERE!), to product reviews, to events happening in and around Ottawa – they even have a photography challenge happening at the moment which is perfect for Mom’s who want to learn and share about taking better pictures of their kids! Pretty sweet – and definitely worth checking out and adding to your bookmarks!

You can check out the Kids in the Capital blog here: http://kidsinthecapital.wordpress.com/

They are often looking for guest bloggers too, so if you have something that you’d like to blog about that would be worth sharing with other Ottawa families, contact them!!: kidsinthecapital@gmail.com

Ottawa Childrens Photographer ~ Splash!

What a yucky weekend we had here in Ottawa!! Its the first weekend that we’ve had in a long time where I had some free time and the hubby had some free time and I was dying to get out and shoot. When I checked the weather for the weekend though, I was SO disappointed to read that they were calling for rain…ALL weekend! BUT, being the die hard photographer that I am, I decided to take my babe out today for some splashing and figured I’d try to capture some of it! May as well make the most of the rain, right?!

I’ve been thinking a lot too about how I am rarely capturing my OWN kids in some of their natural moments these days. Between the busyness of work life and family life, its so easy to forget my own family! So I’m really happy that I got out to take these of my daughter this weekend. She’s not normally the “Get Dirty” kind of girl, but she did enjoy this for a few moments. ;-)

Ottawa Childrens Photographer ~ My Girl

It is SO hard for me to believe that my baby girl is turning THREE on the 27th of May!! It seems like just yesterday that we received the call that we had waited so long to hear: “We have a referral for your family and its a beautiful 6 week old baby girl!“. As long as I live I will never forget the warm rush of emotion I felt the first time I saw her face. Those big brown eyes and those gorgeous lips – she was sheer perfection and it was as if I had known this teeny tiny little baby, living half the world away, my whole life.

Today I look at that same sweet face in complete disbelief. HOW were we so lucky to have fate bring us such an amazing daughter who is just the most perfect fit for our family? I can say with 100% honesty that there is not a single day that passes that I am not grateful for her being in our lives. She is more than just my daughter. She has taught me patience, empathy, kindness, selflessness, humor and how to be the best person that I can possibly be in all aspects of my life. All things that I did not know to the same depth or level that I know them now. The joy that she brings to our lives is more than we could have ever imagined and I am forever grateful to the wonderful, strong woman who has allowed us the privilege of parenting her baby girl.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Both of my children are SO difficult to photograph. You’d think that because they have a photographer as a Mom they would be used to it, but its the exact opposite! Its HARD work to get my kiddos to cooperate when I have a camera in my hand so believe me when I tell you – I REALLY worked for these! LOL! I have tried to do my best to capture each of my children’s age milestones (and other memorable times) with at least a photo or two. I was one of those kids growing up that never had a lot of pictures of myself or my family (growing up I’m not sure we EVER had a family portrait come to think of it!) and I really don’t want it to be the same for my kids. Capturing these small moments and milestones now many not seem like much now, but I know first hand how valuable those will be to my children for years to come.
Okay, without further blabbering on…here’s my girl!!
I’m pretty sure that I will be having this last one printed on a B-I-G canvas for our living room!!!!
An Old Soul ~ Ottawa Child Photographers
Now, you will know that from my previous work, I do not process many of my photos in black and white. Its not that I don’t like black and white – on the contrary actually, I DO!! Its just that for me, the photo REALLY needs to ’speak’ to me. It really needs to LOOK like it should be in black and white. And for whatever reason, maybe its the over all style of my images, I really don’t find that I do it often.
ANYWAY, all of that changed when I got home from this session with Eden yesterday. Its the first time in maybe….EVER, that I actually thought the majority of the photos suited black and white!! And I was THRILLED!
Eden is a girl who is totally mature and wise beyond her years and I somewhere in her there is this old soul. It really just radiates from her in these images I think. Maybe that’s the reason that I felt most of these looked so perfect in black and white? YOU tell ME I guess!
