Ottawa Family Photographer: Zoe and Amelia

Being a Family Photographer in Ottawa comes with many perks. TONS, really. ;) One of the biggest ones is getting to meet all sorts of families. Each and every one is unique and I love coming away from a session feeling as though my clients and I made a connection. Its important for me. I really want them to be happy and to be at ease with their choice in trusting me with their family memories. As an adoptive mom, I find it a little extra exciting when I’m contacted by a fellow adoptive family for photos. Maybe because I can relate to the joy, excitement, challenges and triumphs an adoptive family goes through – it just has that extra element of emotion for me. So when Zoe and Amelia’s Mom contacted me about fall family photos for her girls, I was thrilled. The subject of Amelia’s adoption from China and my own family’s adoptions from Ethiopia and here in Ontario gave us tons to talk about. :)

Things I loved about this session:

~ The perfect weather we had. Not too hot and not too cool. Thanks Mother Nature.

~ Little Zoe’s boundless energy. This little girl could RUN!

~ Amelia’s quick wit and hilarious questions. At many points during the session I COMPLETELY forgot I was talking to a 4 year old.

~ Mom’s bag of props. I love when parents come prepared with bribes, props and distraction tactics. With two young children its ALWAYS appreciated!

~ Both girl’s sweet, kind nature. Amelia (who looooved the camera) was a fantastic sport and is such a wonderful, patient big sister. Sweet sibling relationships are hands down, one of my absolute favorite things to see. :)

Thank you SO much Jodi, for choosing me to photograph your two adorable girls. I had a lot of fun on the weekend and sincerely hope I have the opportunity to see them (and you!) again!

Four in a Row! ~ Gatineau Family Photographer

I know I’ve said this before but I am always so, so, SO grateful when I have the opportunity to photograph a client more than once. To me its really the equivalent of them saying “We believe in you and what you can create for us” and for someone who creates art for a living, there’s nothing more fulfilling or rewarding than to know that someone values what you do. So far I have had the wonderful opportunity to photograph this gorgeous family four times now, including this session blogged today!

We met down in Chelsea, Quebec (just outside of Gatineau) for the session at a beautiful little spot that a friend and fellow photographer who lives near by told me about. (Ironically, I also photographed this photographer’s family in early July at the same location seen here!) This time I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful wooden bridge that covers the near-by creek though – it’s so rustic and lovely with such wonderful light. And I was so grateful for it on a day as bright and sunny as the one we had! I will say, we had a challenge on our hands though! A technical difficulty put us back a bit of time which ended up making the kids a bit restless for their nap. I’m super happy with how the pictures came out though!! Oh, and the tricycle helped. What child doesn’t loooove a tricycle?! That was definitely worth some smiles. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you Dan, Renee, Zachary and Mia for choosing me once again to capture your family’s memories. I have SO enjoyed watching your family grow and change and I hope that I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity again in the future! Save travels back home!

Ottawa Family Photographers ~ The Lacroix Family

Last Thursday evening I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful Lacroix Family at the Arboretum and Experimental farm here in Ottawa! We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather either. The sun had been shining all day and there was a beautiful breeze that helped keep us cool. I couldn’t have been happier since most of my sessions so far this Spring have been rained out or rescheduled due to weather!

These guys were a lot of fun and were so easy going that it really made them a pleasure to work with. Actually, in our initial emails Irene-Ann had mentioned that she wanted something nice and natural, but nothing too ordinary. So…being the creative gal that I am, I thought it would be fun to bring along one of the antique buckets I had purchased on my junking expedition earlier this Spring, fill it with some beautiful red apples and see how we could work them in as a prop with the girls! And I think it all came together very nicely! The girls ended up having a snack for our walk, and the apples did make fun, colourful little props which complimented the colours in their outfits and the natural setting perfectly!

Thank you so much for the the fun time Lacroix family! I’m confident you’ll love your new family photos for years to come. :)

If this blog post receives at least 15 unique comments (that’s 15 comments from 15 different people!), the Lacroix family will earn a free 8×10 image of their choice when they place their order!!! So please do this beautiful family a favor and leave them some love in the comment section below if you have a minute!

More Morgan! ~ Ottawa Children’s Photographer

Better late than never, right? ;)

If you recall, I did a session with the gorgeous Morgan back in late March. You can view the images and read more about Morgan’s story here. At 8 years old, Morgan is such an inspiration. On her own, she decided that she wanted to collect a mile of hair and donate it for Cancer. Well, a few weeks back Morgan finally got her hair cut with a number of other girls from her hockey team, and a few more from the Cornwall area was well. Because our schedules didn’t coincide, I wasn’t able to attend the hair-cutting itself, however, Morgan and I were able to meet up last week to take some of the “after” photos of Morgan with slightly less hair! Isn’t it totally ADORABLE?! I think it suits her!

I love opportunities like this. To not only meet new people, but to have the amazing opportunity to photograph people in our community who are making such a big difference. Thank you Morgan for allowing me to document this time for you. I’m looking forward to keeping connected with Morgan and her Mom through Twitter and you can bet that if Morgan has any new ideas (or more hair to cut!) I’ll be the first in line to offer my support and to help document it!

What are we waiting for? ~ Ottawa Family Photographer

Next month? Next year? Several years from now? Is there ever really a perfect time to have your family photos taken? If so, when?

I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot lately. Because I, myself have really been slacking on making sure I have enough of images of my OWN family. Not just my kids – of my ENTIRE family. Awful of me I know. But its like that saying “the cobbler’s children have no shoes”. In the past I’ve focused so greatly on building my business and photographing other’s families and kids, that often I’ve inadvertently neglected to document my own family. I’m working on making major changes in that department.

When I hear chatter from people about whether or not to get family photos, I often hear a lot of this type of thing:

“We don’t have time this year…maybe next year…”

“Maybe when we can afford to spend more…photos are so expensive…”

“Maybe when I lose those last few pounds…”

Does this sound like you? Of course it does. Because it sounds like me as well. If truth be told, I am not comfortable in front of the camera. I never have been. At the moment I am not at my goal weight. I feel like every time I have a camera pointed in my direction I look like I’m making the Chandler Bing smile AND despite how easy I am able to make it look, my kids are super difficult to photograph. Sometimes it seems more like torture than an enjoyable experience for me. So believe me, if you have a reason for not doing this, I get where you are coming from!

But guess what? I also have a fear. I have the fear that after I am gone, my children will only have a small handful of photographs of me. I worry that when they think about me, they won’t remember me as the Mom who’s in the photos with them, but rather as the mom who took them all or worse, ducked out when a camera was pointed her way. And that is not the legacy I want to leave my family with. No matter how unhappy I could ever be with parts of my body, or how awkward it feels to be in front of the camera, I know in my heart of hearts that my kids won’t be looking back at the photos saying “Sheesh, I wish she’d have lost some weight before taking those pictures” or “I wish she had a nicer smile“. No. Because I am their Mom. And like all children, mine love me far beyond my own insecurities. And so do yours.

There is no perfect time.

It’s true. There will always be a reason not to do this. But life is uncertain. Those of you who have ever lost a loved one knows this all too well. We have no idea what’s in store for us tomorrow, or a week from now, or a year from now. There are people as young as myself being diagnosed with things like Breast Cancer. And that scares me to death. So I can’t wait. I can’t hope that the perfect time for a family photo is around the corner. The perfect time is now.

Are family photos expensive? Its an investment. And like any investment, cost is relative – its about what you VALUE. Putting off that new techie gadget or designer handbag could easily afford you an amazing set of professional quality images. What about time, you don’t have enough time for family photos this year? Set aside 2 hours. Seriously. That is the length of the average family photography session. How about your weight? Still waiting to lose 10, 20, 30 pounds? Stop stressing! Love yourself for who you are and just be the person your family loves. Because you…yes YOU are fabulous and beautiful just the way you are.

I hope this post is that little push that some of you need to take a real, honest look at some of the reasons you may have been putting off family photos. And I hope that you act on it. Book yourself a session with a professional photographer who’s work you admire. I think you’ll realize the same thing that I, myself am slowly learning – how painless it really is.
